Choice Hotels has named Dominic Dragisich interim chief executive after Patrick Pacious stepped down as president and CEO, effective May 20. Pacious stays on as an advisor through August 31 to ease the handoff, while the board runs a formal search for a permanent leader. The company reaffirmed its full-year 2026 financial guidance the same day, a move meant to steady franchisees and investors during the change.

A Franchisor's Track Record

Over nearly 21 years, including as CEO since 2017, Pacious grew Choice from 11 to 22 brands and pushed into upscale and extended-stay lodging through the WoodSpring Suites and Radisson Americas acquisitions. That expansion widened the menu of brands a hotel owner can franchise under one company. The next CEO inherits a larger, more diversified portfolio and the job of keeping it profitable for franchisees.

Why an Insider Leads the Interim

Dragisich previously served as chief financial officer and chief global brand officer, so he already knows Choice's economics and its franchisee relationships. Naming a known operator rather than an outside caretaker reduces the odds of strategy whiplash while the search runs. For franchisees, continuity at the top usually means fewer sudden shifts in fees, technology roadmaps, or brand standards.

What Operators Should Watch

A leadership search introduces uncertainty, and the practical question for owners is whether Choice's capital-light, franchisee-focused strategy holds through the transition. Reaffirming guidance signals the company expects no near-term disruption to development pipelines or support. Operators across the 22 brands should track whether the permanent CEO comes from inside or outside, since that choice tends to set the tone for the next several years.
