The Threshold Brands flooring concept hands its Salt Lake City market to a veteran multi-unit operator, wagering that an underbuilt garage category rewards experience.

Granite Garage Floors has awarded three franchise territories in Salt Lake City, handing the Utah market to Greg Layton, an operator with construction and pipeline experience who has run a top-10 location for the brand over seven years. The deal extends the Threshold Brands concept into a state where professional garage coatings remain rare.
Garage floor coating sits inside the larger home-improvement market but faces little organized competition. The company estimates fewer than 1 percent of the country's roughly 80 million residential garages have a professional coating. That gap is the pitch, combining low penetration with rising interest in finished, functional home space.
Awarding a new state to a proven multi-unit owner rather than a first-timer reduces execution risk. Layton already knows the brand's systems and economics, so the Salt Lake City market can scale faster than a cold start. The move mirrors a wider franchise trend of concentrating territory in seasoned hands.
Home-based models like Granite Garage Floors keep overhead low, which makes multi-territory expansion easier to finance. For operators, the lesson is that categories with weak competition and high ticket sizes, lifted further by storage and cabinet upsells, can support faster build-outs than crowded service segments.
