The private equity giant's reported acquisition extends a consolidation wave that already includes Neighborly and Groundworks into garage door repair.

KKR has agreed to acquire A1 Garage Door Service, a Phoenix-based residential repair and installation company, in a deal reported at roughly $2 billion. The transaction, first reported by Reuters and not yet confirmed by either company, would hand the private equity firm one of the largest independent garage door operators in the country. It also extends KKR's existing bet on fragmented home services, where it already owns Neighborly and Groundworks.
A1 was founded in 2007 by Tommy Mello, who grew the business from roughly $25 million in annual revenue in 2017 to more than $200 million today across about 20 states. Cortec Group backed that growth with a recapitalization in 2022, a stake KKR's purchase would now let the firm exit. The appeal for investors is straightforward: a broken garage door gets fixed immediately, not comparison-shopped for weeks, which gives operators pricing power that public markets have historically undervalued.
For franchise and multi-unit operators watching the home services category, the deal signals that institutional capital sees room for far larger platforms than garage doors alone would suggest. KKR's playbook with Neighborly already spans plumbing, electrical, pest control, and HVAC franchise brands, and Groundworks does the same in foundation repair. A1's roughly 20-state footprint and steady acquisition pace make it a natural fit for that model, with local operators absorbed into a national marketing, recruiting, and purchasing system.
Neither KKR nor Cortec Group has confirmed deal terms, and A1 could not be reached for comment when Reuters first reported the transaction. The real test will be whether KKR can keep acquiring smaller garage door operators at the pace A1 has managed since 2017 without diluting service quality or technician retention. For franchise brands in adjacent home service categories, the deal is another data point that private equity still sees years of runway in consolidating local trades.
