A 200-unit franchisee adds Ohio scale as Mas Restaurant Group exits the market, signaling how capital keeps concentrating among the largest operators.

Southpaw, a Taco Bell and Dunkin operator with more than 180 restaurants, has acquired 43 Taco Bell units in Ohio from Mas Restaurant Group. The deal pushes Southpaw past 200 locations across seven states. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Mas Restaurant Group, backed by Bessemer Investors, is reshaping its portfolio. It sold 44 Texas restaurants to Ghai Restaurant Group earlier in June and will keep 36 Taco Bells in Houston. The Ohio sale lets the company concentrate its capital in one core market while Bessemer looks for new restaurant investments.
Large franchisees keep buying scale because density lowers cost. When one operator runs many units in a region, it spreads field management, marketing, and supply purchasing across more stores, which lifts margins. Sellers like Mas benefit too, since a single buyer with proven systems closes faster and protects employees during the handoff.
This deal fits a broader run of franchisee-to-franchisee transactions. JRI Hospitality bought 43 Freddy's units in March, and KBP took on 78 Sonic restaurants in February. Smaller operators are cashing out to well-capitalized groups, and brands increasingly rely on those groups to fund growth and absorb aging stores.
Watch whether Southpaw reinvests in remodels and technology across the new Ohio units, and whether Bessemer returns as a buyer elsewhere in the Taco Bell system. Both signals tell franchisees where the next deals, and the next pools of capital, are heading.
