HomeSmart International has merged with NorthGroup Real Estate, absorbing nearly 2,000 agents into its national network and pushing the brokerage's agent count past 27,000. The deal deepens HomeSmart's footprint across North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, four states where its 100%-commission model is drawing agents away from traditional split-commission brokerages. NorthGroup will keep operating under its own name and local leadership.

A Different Kind of Franchise Growth

HomeSmart doesn't add territory the way a typical service franchise does. It grows by recruiting brokerages and individual agents into a national referral network built on flat fees instead of commission splits, so a merger like this adds scale without opening a single new storefront. For franchisors watching agent attrition at legacy brands, it is a reminder that real estate consolidation increasingly runs through agent-count acquisitions, not office openings.

Why Agents Are the Asset

NorthGroup founder Scott Wilkinson keeps running his business exactly as before while plugging into HomeSmart's referral network and back-office resources, and NorthGroup's agents get a national platform without changing how they get paid. That structure, business as usual for agents, scale for the parent brand, has become the template real estate franchisors use to grow fast in a market where independent brokerages increasingly trade autonomy for infrastructure.
