A husband-and-wife team is betting on Scenthound's membership model to build a multi-unit footprint in the Pacific Northwest. Zo Hummel and her spouse have purchased eight Scenthound franchise licenses spanning the South Sound region south of Seattle and the Vancouver, Washington market near Portland, with the first location now open in University Place.

Why Operators Buy in Bulk

Scenthound's model is built around routine, subscription-based dog care rather than one-off grooming visits, an approach that rewards operators who can open several territories at once and cross-sell memberships across them. Hummel brings 23 years of operations leadership from EdTech companies HMH and NWEA, a background in scaling systems and teams that Scenthound has increasingly recruited for as it expands past 170 open locations nationwide.

A Phased Build-Out

The University Place Scenter opened September 18 at 3556 Market Place West, marking the first of eight planned locations across the two Washington regions. Rather than opening all eight at once, the Hummels are following Scenthound's standard playbook of proving out one location before layering on the next, using the first Scenter to build a founding team that can staff and train future units.

What It Signals for the Category

Multi-unit buys like this one point to growing franchisee confidence in membership-based pet care, a segment that has outpaced traditional groomers on recurring revenue. For franchisors, an eight-unit commitment from a single operator also reduces the cost of finding and onboarding new territory owners, concentrating growth risk with an operator who already has a stake in making the whole cluster work.
